Step-by-Step Guide to Register for Social Health Authority (SHA)

Registering for SHA doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s a simple, straightforward guide to help you complete the process and make your payment.

Step 1: Dial *147#

  • Start by dialing 147# on your phone.
  • Follow the prompts that appear on your screen. Just pick the relevant options as they come up.

Step 2: Visit the Website

  • After you’ve completed the steps on your phone, go to afyayangu.go.ke.
  • Click on “Register” to start setting up your profile.

Step 3: Enter Your ID and Phone Number

  • Type in your ID number and phone number.
  • Make sure the phone number is correct since you’ll get OTP (One-Time Password) codes that you’ll need to enter to move forward.

Step 4: Create Your Signature/PIN

  • On the platform, you’ll be prompted to create your digital signature.
  • This is important to confirm your approval during the registration and sign-in process.

Step 5: Complete Your Profile

You’ll need to provide a few more details to complete your profile, including:

  • County
  • Sub-county
  • Ward

Fill these out carefully to make sure your SHA profile is accurate.

Step 6: Means Testing for Unemployed or Self-employed Clients

If you’re unemployed or self-employed, part of the process includes a quick means test. This step helps figure out what your premium will be based on your situation.

Friendly tip: It’s best to do the means test yourself to avoid any surprises. Sometimes, the premium can be higher than expected, and we wouldn’t want you to feel misled. If you’re unsure about how to do it, feel free to head to a cyber café, where they can help guide you through it.

Step 7: Pay Your Premium via MPESA

Once registration is done and your premium is set, you’ll need to pay through MPESA:

  • Paybill Number: 200222
  • Account Number: Your ID number

Step 8: Eligibility for Services

After the premium payment is made, you will be eligible to access healthcare services under SHA, whether you’re unemployed or self-employed.

By following these steps, you can get your SHA registration done quickly and access the services you need.

Sometimes the Paybill system can be temporarily down or experience delays. Just give it a few hours, then try again, and it should go through smoothly. Let us know if you need further assistance!

I used to pay a premium of KES 300 for an elderly person. Today, I can see the premium has changed to KES 500. Why is this the case even though the dependent in question is living in destitution with zero income ?

As long as you have added your spouse onto your cover as a dependent they will be covered. you need to confirm whether you are eligible for SHA services on the SHA portal. You can visit us and we will confirm that for you.

      • Sibuor

        January 2, 2025 - 5:14 am

I used to pay a premium of KES 300 for an elderly person. Today, I can see the premium has changed to KES 500 without notice. Now SHA debits my income even though I have a private cover and still demands me to pay as much as KES 500 for my dependants. This is too exploitative given that the dependent in question is living in poverty and can barely afford a meal. I am disappointed in this level of turpitude!!

I have paid using the pay bill a premium that was 138 monthly after self assessment two weeks ago but it did not reflect. I went to consult at Huduma centre previously but they said that my premium would be changed since it’s so little and below 300 shillings which is the least amount to be paid. What should I do?

PS I am unemployed and below 25 years.

You will need to first register on SHA via http://www.sha.go.ke and do the registration there. Once done, you can now do the self-assessment test, AKA ‘means testing’, which will determine how much you should pay per year.
