The 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene: Strengthening Infection Prevention at MCH

At Mother and Child Hospital, clean hands are part of our care promise.

                               – ms. Daisy Adalla, CEO Mother and Child hospital

Hand hygiene is one of the simplest yet most powerful tools in preventing infections in healthcare settings. In line with our commitment to patient safety and quality improvement, our clinical team recently participated in a CME focused on Infection Prevention in Theatre.

This in-house session was expertly led by our very own Medical Officer, Dr. Korir, and Theatre Technician, Ms. Maribel Thige , two professionals deeply familiar with both the protocols and the day-to-day realities of surgical environments.

Learning the 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene

The session centered around the WHO-recommended 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene, which every healthcare worker should integrate into their routine:

  1. Before touching a patient

  2. Before any clean or aseptic procedure

  3. After risk of exposure to body fluids

  4. After touching a patient

  5. After touching the patient’s surroundings

By following these five moments without fail, our team can greatly reduce the risk of hospital-acquired infections, improve patient outcomes, and protect healthcare staff as well.

Infection Prevention: Everyone’s Responsibility

The session was practical, participatory, and deeply relevant , especially as we continue on our SafeCare quality improvement journey.

Infection prevention is not limited to the theatre. It begins at the point of care, at the bedside, in the wards, and continues through every corner of our facility. Whether it’s a nurse starting an IV, a doctor reviewing a patient, or a technician preparing instruments, hand hygiene must be non-negotiable.

This CME showed our commitment to ongoing internal capacity building and to aligning every department with international best practices in infection control.

Our Promise to Patients and Staff

Through initiatives like this, we are not only complying with guidelines , we are actively building a culture of excellence and accountability.

Mother and Child Hospital is proud to be walking the SafeCare journey, and we will continue to invest in training, awareness, and clinical practice that upholds the highest standards of safety and quality care.

Because at the heart of quality care, are clean hands and a shared commitment to do better.
